Numbers 22
In this chapter we are introduced to Balaam. We learn that he had a reputation for his prophecies coming true (v6) and that he was a prophet for hire (v7). We also learn that he is from a city, Pethor, by the River, presumably the Euphrates or one of it tributaries, some 400 or more miles away in Aram of Mesopotamia, modern Syria (see Numbers 23:7; Deuteronomy 23:4).
